Melmac
Melmac Magic Mushroom Information
The Melmac Magic Mushroom is a potent variant of the Penis Envy strain. It’s rumored that the name “Melmac” was given to this variant by a spore vendor called “Homestead” in reference to a fictional planet home to alien life from the 80’s sitcom ALF. Melmac also goes by the name Homestead Penis Envy.

Description
Introducing: Melmac the Magic Mushroom
A tale of enigmatic fungal creation unfolds: behold, the Melmac mushroom, wrought by human hands, but not by genetic modification. Mycological artisans, through generations of laboratory-guided selective breeding, have crafted this tangled mass of thick, blue-bruising fungi that defy earthly expectations.
Melmac Origin
Originating from the notorious Penis Envy mushrooms, some purport Melmac mushrooms to be even closer to their 1970s-introduced forebear. Mycologists the world over engage in spirited debates over the veracity of these claims. To some, these peculiar fungi are known as “Melmac Penis Envy” or “Homestead Penis Envy” mushrooms. The distinctive curvature and uncommon growth patterns of Penis Envy mushrooms precede them, and the Melmac mushroom strain carries those same characteristics along with the benefits associated with Psilocybe cubensis mushrooms.
Enter the world of Melmac Mushroom history: Terrence McKenna, an activist, and writer, unveiled the precursor to Penis Envy after purportedly gathering spore samples from an intriguing psilocybe in the Amazon Rainforest. Fellow mycologists continued the journey, cultivating and propagating the specimens while stabilizing the genetics of these wild penis envy spores within laboratory confines. Rich Gee (Richard Guitierrez) is hailed for the contemporary Penis Envy strain’s inception, a favorite of psychedelic aficionados worldwide.
As the 1980s dawned, Homestead, an enterprising company, began to tinker with the Penis Envy mushroom’s original genetics. A unique variant was birthed, so strikingly distinct that it necessitated a moniker: Melmac. These mushrooms flaunt twisted stems and undulating caps, meriting the description “gnarly.” The name Melmac, perhaps a nod to the fictional home planet of Alf, the protagonist of a beloved 80s sitcom, gained popularity. Throughout the decade, Homestead marketed spore prints of this variant, ultimately vanishing as a company. Yet, within the psychedelic revolution’s resurgence, Melmac mushrooms are regaining their esteemed status.
Melmac Potency
Psilocybin, the primary psychoactive component within Melmac mushrooms, is akin to other Psilocybe cubensis mushrooms. Ingestion ushers in a psychedelic trip, altering perceptions of space, time, and self, accompanied by a kaleidoscope of potential sensations such as nausea, anxiety, and distress. The potency of psilocybe mushrooms hinges on growing conditions, but some species and strains may yield higher psilocybin concentrations. Oakland Hyphae and the Psilocybin Cup are spearheading efforts to elucidate potency disparities, and Penis Envy mushrooms consistently rank among the most potent Psilocybe cubensis varieties. The Malmec mushroom strain, however, remains relatively untested and uncharted in comparison.
Melmac Appearance
Melmac mushrooms exhibit a wavy cap and contorted stems, a defining characteristic. While similar in overall shape and curvature to traditional Penis Envy mushrooms, the undulating cap of Melmac mushrooms sets them apart. They also share the propensity to turn blue upon bruising, indicating psilocybin’s presence through oxidation.
Existing as a variant of the Penis Envy mushroom, Melmac mushrooms are more easily recognizable than other popular cubensis strains. However, the very notion of a “mushroom strain” is a matter of contention. Terms like “strain,” “cultivar,” and “cultivated variety” are used interchangeably, but many so-called cubensis strains are visually indistinct and share similar potencies. Penis Envy mushrooms are a notable exception, with their distinctively shaped fruiting bodies. Other popular variants include Albino Penis Envy (APE) and Penis Envy Uncut, each boasting unique characteristics.
How To Grow Melmac Mushrooms
- Innoculate grain bag with 3-5cc of Melmac liquid culture or spores via spore syringe.
- Store the inoculated grain bag in a dry area for colonization making sure to maintain a substrate temperature of 84-86. Colonizing mycelium generates its own heat, so an ambient room temperature in the high 70s is recommended.
- Once fully colonized, prepare the tin container and begin layering the substrate and colonized grain. Begin and end with a layer of the substrate.
- Set aside for re-colonization (10-14 days)
- Prepare the li by adding fresh air holes and cover with micro-pore tape.
- Replace the lid and place the tin into fruiting conditions. Reduce the ambient temperatures to reduce the substrate temperatures to 74-78 degrees F.
- Mist the inside of the chamber lid when needed.
- Harvest
Melmac Strain Magic Mushroom Growing Parameters:
| Preferred Substrate(s): | Various grain types, compost, pasteurized dung/straw |
| Substrate Temperature (Colonization): | 84/86 degrees F. |
| Substrate Temperature (Fruiting): | 74/78 degrees F. |
| Humidity/FAE | During Colonization: 100%RH, 0 FAE: During Fruiting: 90%RH, FAE 2-5x per day |
Note: Substrate temps should be measured internally using a probe thermometer. We’ve found that multi-probe thermometers, such as this dual probe and this quad probe thermometer are easy and very accurate. Sources:The Mushroom Cultivator (P. Stamets), psilosophy.info,psilopedia.com,spores101.co
