Best Pressure Cooker for Home Cultivators
After many years of making our own mushroom cultivation substrates and spawn, we understand the importance of having the right equipment when it comes to growing mushrooms at home. One essential tool that every home mushroom cultivator needs is a pressure cooker. In this article, we will discuss the best medium/large-sized pressure cookers for home and commercial mushroom cultivation and provide you with all the information needed to make an informed purchasing decision.
Why Do You Need a Pressure Cooker for Growing Mushrooms?
One of the biggest challenges in mushroom cultivation is preventing contamination from bacteria, mold, and other unwanted microorganisms. Traditionally an industrial autoclave has been used to sterilize instruments and materials for sterile applications. A pressure cooker accomplishes the same thing and is an economical solution to ensure a sterile growing environment by using high pressure and temperature to kill any potential contaminants.
Additionally, a pressure cooker is essential for preparing agar medium and liquid culture solution, which are both used when working with mushroom cultures and mushroom spores. Agar plates require a sterile environment to prevent contamination, and a pressure cooker is the best tool for achieving this.

The All American pressure cooker is made in the USA and features a metal-to-metal sealing system that ensures a tight, secure seal. This is by far the highest-quality pressure cooker we have used to date and have used the same model for multiple years with minimal maintenance. Best Value: Presto 23 Quart Pressure Canner and Cooker
The Presto pressure cooker is another excellent option for mushroom cultivation. It has a 23 quart capacity and can be used for both pressure cooking and canning. The Presto pressure cooker features an easy-to-read pressure gauge and a pressure regulator that automatically maintains the proper cooking pressure. We have used many of these units over the past 3 years. They are durable and our only complaint is that we have noticed some bulging on the base of the units after prolonged use. In spite of this, we strongly recommend this model for hobbyists and light commercial growers.

Cheapest: T-fal 22 Quart Pressure Cooker
The T-fal 22 Quart Pressure Cooker is our recommendation for anyone on a budget. This is a great entry-level pressure cooker that has a large 22-quart capacity and is made from lightweight aluminum. It features a manual dial so that you can set the desired psi, which is pretty convenient. However, out of the 5 units we have used in the past, this dial has failed on us after 8 months of use or so. In addition, we have noticed the bottom bulging after prolonged use. This pressure cooker is easy to use and is perfect for mushroom growers on a budget. But understand that we have had to replace the cooker on average once a year, so it may be worth your while to spend the extra money for a higher quality unit.
