The Top 5 Most Potent Magic Mushrooms (P. Cubensis)
With their golden tops, slender white stalks, and brown spores, the P. Cubensis is undoubtedly the classic magic mushroom strain. Due to the strains’ balanced psychoactive properties, adaptability, and forgiveness to less-than-ideal conditions, the P. Cubensis is by far the most popular psychedelic mushroom for amateur and professional cultivators alike.
While P. Cubensis is far from being the most potent psychedelic mushroom strain, there are a few sub-varients of this strain that have been isolated and refined over the years that produce psychoactive fruits far more potent than your standard cubes. This provides the opportunity for mycologists to further isolate and cross-breed to create mushrooms that are very high in potency. Each year in an event called the Psilocybin Cup, professional mycologists compete to produce a mushroom with the highest levels of active psychoactive compounds.
How do we determine the potency of the magic mushrooms?
Determining the potency of psychoactive mushrooms involves extracting and measuring the concentration of psychoactive chemicals found in the test culture. These psychoactive compounds found in psychedelic mushrooms are Psilocybin, Psilocin, Baeocystin, and Norbaeocystin. These four compounds are found in varying levels in each psychedelic mushroom species and work in conjunction to provide a unique experience for the user. However, Psilocybin and Psilocin are generally believed to contribute the most to the potency of the mushroom.
So what are the 5 most potent cubensis magic mushrooms?
Based on the results of the 2021 Oakland Hyphae Psilocybin Cup. The five most potent P. Cubensis varieties are:
1) Tidal Wave
Winner of the 2021 Oakland Hyphae Psilocybin Cup, the Tidal Wave sample contained an astounding 2.26% Psilocybin and 1.56% Psilocin, for a combined alkaloid percentage of 3.82%. Tidal Wave was created by the Magic Myco team by crossing a Penis Envy variant with the B+ variant.
2) Fuzzy Balls
Coming in 2nd in the 2021 Psilocybin Cup, is the Fuzzy Balls sample submitted by Chip Forseyte. Little is known about this sample, but it is understood that it is a mutation, most likely of the Tidal Wave or Enigma variants. During testing, it contained an impressive 3% total alkaloid count, comprised of 1.67% Psilocybin and 1.32% Psilocin.
3) Penis Envy (PE7)
By a very small margin, the Penis Envy sample submitted by Blackapple411 took third place. This sample contained a total of 2.9% alkaloids, made up of 1.65% Psilocybin and 1.26% Psilocin. Unlike the other two samples, this was the only sample that had the appearance of a “normal” mushroom. Goes to show that the Penis Envy variant is still one of the heaviest-hitting varieties available.
4) Albino Penis Envy
The Albino Penis Envy variant came in 4th place with a Psilocybin content of 1.73%, and a Psilocin content of 0.61%, for a total of 2.34% alkaloids. Submitted by Dr. Greythumb, this albino variant packs a punch.
5) Penis Envy Uncut
Last but not least, the Minds Eye team submitted a PE Uncut specimen which placed 5th. This sample was shown to contain 1.39% Psilocybin, and 0.93% Psilocin, for a total of 2.23% total alkaloids.
